Evaluation

Looking back at this module i have summarised and concluded the information i have gathered and learned from this whole experience, evaluating  the successes and failures I’ve had and how i can improve my approach to this module to help me in the future.

First of all i have learned what i want to achieve from this practice which is to become satisfied in my own independence and work, rather than working with a company. I have realised from this experience that i am an illustrator that likes having my own creative freedom because that is what helps me produce my best work in my opinion. For example working with a company you are challenged but also confined from the way you naturally work, which for some people can help them improve their working method but the thought of that frustrates me. Everything is being controlled and you don't have an input or a say with what the outcome will be, from a controlled environment and  controlled way of illustrating your illustration doesn't have your own creative spark and looks the same unless you are experienced in that type of art form where people admire your style of illustration. I would rather have pieces of art work that is identifiable to me and people ask for work or for me to be involved in their projects because of the type of styled illustration it is and its what they feel will express and push what they are trying to visualise. On the other hand i think because of my thoughts and frustration within that type of working industry, its my lack of faith in myself because i would not have a natural work flow being told how i should work because everything would have to be rushed in something that isn’t my own work style. So maybe that is the reason i feel so negative about working in controlled environment even though i found working as a group team is easier but i also like having creative control whilst working by myself.

From doing my own freelancing and working with different people in the past for this module, i have learned that you will be going back and forth constantly changing your work to satisfy your client. And sometimes there are downfalls with spending so much time on a piece of work because your client could change their mind in an instant, which could involve you to redo the whole illustrative piece. From doing this work experience there are so good and bad point i would like to point out.

Good;
. Finished the work on time
. The client was happy with the work they were shown
. I gained experience
. More people will see my work

Bad;
. Lost contact with a client after deadline
. work was time consuming for a free commission
. I do not have any work advertised

what i have also learned is how to manage my time efficiently and not be afraid to fail in my practice because with failing comes experience. Within my practice i tend to take further actions, seeing i have mostly worked with music artists that need album covers and companies just starting out with no logos. however with it being non commissioned and spending hours on the piece, they would get back to me saying they changed their mind or not even use your work at all. With other people freelancing with the same goal you have to find new innovative ways to get people to want to work with you. As social media is where everybody is places like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and tumbler are great ways the get your work out there and find new clients. I have also signed up to a website called ‘TalentHouse’ that is a place where they hold competition for musicians and illustrator to design and create artwork for big stars such as one direction and receive an email overtime there is a new competition available this just helps my work get on a platform to improve.

SKILLS AUDIT FOR EVALUATION

From evaluating my skills audit i have had some thought about my over skill set. I may have a few strong points in my skills audit but overall it was 50/50 with skills I’m okay with and skills i need to improve to become a better illustrator.
I hope to work on the skills that are relate to my practice instead of trying to improve on everything

At the moment i feel like I’m lacking skills and do not feel like i have that many strong skills at all. But thats why i think with freelancing ill be able to develop my this kills over time with experience.
